The last meeting for 2022 ended on a really high note with the presentation of the prestigious Telemachus Medal - No. 171 to Lindsay Earl.

Lindsay is a highly respected member of the Geelong Branch and has provided exceptional commitment to the Geelong Branch and the Geelong community for many years. His nomination to NATCOM for the Medal was supported unanimously by the Geelong Branch Committee.

To say that Lindsay was surprised would be an understatement! For a more detailed understanding of the Telemachus Medal Award, you can read the Award criteria, the NATCOM letter of ratification and our nomination letter below.

Telemachus Medal (Telem-ach-us)
(Son of Odysseus (Ulysses) and Penelope)

Purpose of the Medal:

On the 17th April 2010, the National Committee of the Ulysses Club Inc introduced the Telemachus Medal.

The suggestion for a Medal to fill an obvious void was initially discussed by members of the 2009 National Committee and was presented to the Branch Representatives at the Extended Natcom meeting in Albany 2010 where it was ratified.

Introduction of the Telemachus Medal is to recognize that many deserving members who did not meet the required criteria as set by the National Committee to qualify for the Life Membership and or Dearnley Medal, were not able to be recognized by the Branch that they choose to be aligned with, for their commendable contributions, commitments or service.

The Telemachus Medal is designed to acknowledge members contributions to the Branch with which they have chosen to be aligned. Whilst still maintaining a meritorious standard its intention is to recognize service which is above and beyond the normal expectations of any member.

Criteria for the Medal:

The following Criteria for the Medal are designed to ensure that awarding of the Medal is significant and its intention is not diminished.

The Nomination for the Medal can be presented to the Branch Committee by a member aligned with that Branch, for consideration but must be submitted through the Branch Committee to the National Committee for consideration.

The Nomination should be supported by the Branch Committee and carry a majority vote.

The Nomination should be signed by the nominator and supporting Committee members.

The member nominated must be a member of the Club for a minimum of four years.

The member must have been aligned with the Branch for a minimum period of two years and must, in the opinion of the Branch Committee, be outstanding i.e. service to the Branch that the member has aligned him / herself with, which is considered to be above and beyond that which would normally be expected of any Member.

In submitting the Nomination, the Nominee’s contributions to the Branch that he / she has aligned to, should be outlined in support of the nomination and should be convincing to the National Committee.

Any Branch of Ulysses Club Inc. can submit nominations for the Telemachus Medal but only two (2) nominations per Branch per year will be permitted.

In order to protect the integrity of the Telemachus Medal and all that it signifies, the National Committee reserves the right to reject a nomination, if it is their view that awarding of the Medal is not justified.

Nominations should be submitted to the National Secretary of Ulysses Club Inc. no later than the 31st December.

Should the National Committee approve the awarding of the Telemachus Medal, the presentations would take place at the Branch to which the person has chosen to align with and would ideally be treated as a momentous occasion.

The Committee members
Geelong Branch
Ulysses Club Inc
Australia.

I wish to nominate Mr Lindsay Earl, Member # 41403 for the Ulysses Telemachus Medal.

The following is a brief summary of Lindsay’s activities within the Geelong Branch, and I am sure that you are already very familiar with many aspects of Lindsay’s outstanding contributions to the Geelong Branch.

Lindsay joined the Ulysses Club Inc in 2005 and has always been affiliated with the Geelong Branch. Lindsay is best characterised as always being the first person to raise his hand to volunteer to help out with the activities of the Branch.

Lindsay has always willingly made himself available to assist in any way required for virtually every charity or fundraising event that the Committee has ever organised during his membership. Lindsay was one of the Branch members on the Executive Committee of the Andrew Love Pink Ribbon Rides which raised over $15,000 for the purchase of equipment for Cancer Centre at The Geelong Hospital.

His other contributions include co-ordinating the riders for Branch fundraising for the Geelong Triathlon, towing the Branch owned Chuck Wagon to events such as the Meet and Greet or the Memorial Ride to provide meals for members of other Branches at large gatherings, manning a BBQ and cleaning up after Geelong Branch social events and storing the Chuck Wagon at his home for more than 12 months. In addition to past service on the Branch Committee, Lindsay has always been involved and been gracious in donating his time to assist others. For example, when the Branch has received requests to take the Dragons Abreast ladies (the breast cancer survivors Dragon Boat racing team) for a motorcycle outing, Lindsay has always been the first to volunteer, just as he has been when some very ill person requested a motorcycle ride as a bucket list item. Lindsay has always made his trike available in these sorts of circumstances and has never declined such a request. He has also served as Branch Quartermaster in the past.

In summary, Lindsay is long standing and a much-respected Geelong Branch Member who has a long history of willingness to give his time and expertise for the benefit of other Ulysses and community members. Even during a recent period of ill health, Lindsay continues to give his best for the Geelong Branch members.

I believe that Lindsay would be a very worthy recipient of the Telemachus Medal, and I ask you all to support this nomination. It will then be forwarded to NATCOM for their consideration.

Yours respectfully,
Jules Pearce, Member # 62715
Geelong Branch President

This nomination was discussed and voted upon at the Geelong Branch Committee Meeting held on 21st September 2022.
